Barrier-Bac Products - Vapor Retarders

Product Introduction

Barrier-Bac Vapor Retarders are high performance under slab vapor retarders developed specifically for the concrete construction industry to retard moisture migration through concrete slabs. They may also be used to control radon, methane, sulphates and many other soil contaminants.

Barrier-Bac vapor retarder products are mechanical interface vapor retarders that meet ASTM E 1745 requirements. These products are comprised of three-layer, co-extruded, biaxially oriented, cross-laminated, polyolefin membranes manufactured only with virgin resins. Our products are independently tested, ensuring that our customers get the highest quality vapor retarders every time.

The ribbed surface of our vapor retarders creates a mechanical interface that, when overlapped and sealed, locks the membrane in place and reduces shifting. Engineered sealing tape takes the same profile as our ribbed membrane and produces a superior mechanical and adhesive seal. This double sealing process greatly reduces the water vapor drive between our membranes over the competition’s flat membrane seams.

Barrier-Bac offers a complete line of under slab vapor retarders: Barrier-Bac 11 mil, Barrier-Bac 16 mil, Barrier-Bac 26 mil Composite, Barrier-Bac 31 mil Composite and BB20T Seam Tape, for adhesive sealing.

We offer membranes in two thicknesses: 11 mil (250 gsm) and 16 mil (350 gsm). We also offer each of these products as composites where a non-woven polypropylene geotextile is laminated to the membrane for increased protection, puncture resistance and friction interface.

Barrier-Bac and Barrier-Bac Composite products with the 250 gsm and 350 gsm membranes meet the ACI 302 specification (thickness of 10 mil or greater) and have also been tested for permeability using ASTM 1745 standards. These products are offered in widths from 4 ft to 12.75 ft and lengths up to 2400 ft. The membranes are flexible and can easily be handled on the job site. Additionally, due to the toughness of these membranes, Barrier-Bac vapor retarder membranes can be installed directly onto the subgrade without applying a sand or smooth aggregate base.

Seaming of the Barrier-Bac vapor retarder products can easily be accomplished by either heat welding or taping. Barrier-Bac manufactures seam tape, BB20T, specifically designed and tested to perform with Barrier-Bac membranes.

Barrier-Bac products are available through a national network of distributors. Our trained and knowledgeable sales force offers personalized service with job site expertise to ensure our product is installed correctly. We appreciate your interest in Barrier-Bac vapor retarder products and encourage you to contact us with any questions.

Benefits of Using Barrier-Bac Products

1. Barrier-Bac vapor retarder products are cross laminated during manufacturing, allowing for high puncture resistance and very low permeance. By using virgin polyolefin resins, the life expectancy of our vapor retarder is more than 100 years. Barrier-Bac products exceed all eight tests required for the ASTM E 1745 Class A Specification.
Standard visqueen sheeting is manufactured from reprocessed and reground plastics. Membranes made using these reprocessed resins have very little chemical resistance and will puncture easily and degrade over time. The only standards that visqueen sheeting must meet are weights and measures. 4 mil, 6 mil and 10 mil visqueen sheets do not meet ASTM E 1745 Class A standards.

2. Barrier-Bac vapor retarders, installed under slab on grade, allow the concrete to cure longer by keeping moisture in the slab. This strengthens the concrete and reduces crack¬ing and curling of the slab.

3. Barrier-Bac seaming tape, BB20T, is manufactured using a tough polyethylene film and a rubberized asphalt adhesive. Standard visqueen sheeting has no recommended tape.

4. MOLD is the fastest growing risk management problem in the United States today. Once mold penetrates a concrete slab, it cannot simply be repaired. The concrete slab must be removed and destroyed in order to remove mold from the building. Barrier-Bac helps prevent mold from entering slabs, reducing the risks involved with inhabitants’ health and reducing the cost associated with “repairing” mold growth.

Barrier-Bac Products

1. Maintain the lamination of flooring products. Flooring adhesives are now water-based, extremely sensitive to moisture and may fail if moisture is introduced into the environ¬ment.

2. Create a non-slip surface.

3. Create a mechanical interface at the seam.

4. Reduce mold by stopping moisture from migrating up through the slab.

5. Reduce the amount of radon gas coming through the slab.

6. Reduce termite infestation.
